Business Administration

If you’re looking for an extremely flexible MBA degree online, then you might want to consider the granddaddy of them all: the master’s in business administration.  The original MBA.

This is one of the most respected, flexible degrees you can get.  And, this degree goes under a few different names, depending on the school you’re in.  The original is, of course, a master’s in business administration.  But it’s also called an mba in business management, mba in business intelligence, or mba in business quantitative methods.  All refer to basically the same degree.

Why Get An MBA?

An MBA is one of the most versatile degrees that you can get, simply because it prepares you for the complex world of business.

The great thing about an mba is that you’re not limited in any way with what you can do with it.  Every industry needs professionals with an mba, so no matter what field you want to work in, you’ll be able to find a great job with a masters in business administration.

Online MBA Programs: What You’ll Learn

A business management mba is going to teach you the ins and outs of business, both theoretical approaches as well as hands-on leadership techniques.  You’ll learn how to thrive in today’s constantly changing business environment, how to outsmart your competition by thinking creatively, how to lead your team with kindness and compassion, measure your organization’s intellectual assets, identify promising new products or services, and much, much more.

An mba teaches you how to succeed in a complex company.  If you’re looking for a leadership role with a lot of responsibility, then you definitely want to look at getting your mba.

Most mba programs are around 62 credit hours if you don’t have a lot of work experience, and around 35-40 credit hours if you do.  The reason for this is because a majority of mba graduates are not fresh out of their 4-year degree.  Most are working professionals with at least a few years experience under their belt.  Many schools understand that this experience is an education in itself, and will offer credit based on what has been learned at work.

Most online mba programs will also allow you to choose a concentration.

It’s always a good idea to choose a concentration because this is what will make you really valuable to future employers.  When you’re an expert in one specific area, you stand apart from the pack.  You can offer more value to a company when you’ve studied one area with focus, instead of being a “jack of all trades”.

Some concentrations you might have to choose from include:

  • Accounting
  • Business Communication
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Marketing
  • Project Management
  • And many moreā€¦

Careers With An MBA

We said it before and we’ll say it again: you can pretty much take your mba anywhere, and do anything with it.

An mba allows you to work in hundreds of industries.  You could be a human resources manager, start your own company, or become a corporate CEO.  It all depends on what you’re interested in.

It’s hard to say just how much you can earn with an mba, simply because there are so many different things you can do with it.  But, Payscale.com has a great list of potential careers that usually require an mba, and how much you can expect to earn if you hold those positions.  Here’s a sample:

  • Senior Financial Analyst – $73, 876
  • Financial Controller – $81,927
  • IT Project Manager – $87,588
  • Chief Financial Officer (CFO) – $123,810
  • Marketing Manager – $77,830
  • Financial Analyst – $53,821
  • Management Consultant – $114,682

It’s important to realize that an mba is one of those degrees where the school you choose has just as much impact on your future success as you do.

What do we mean here?

Well, companies want leaders with an mba, to be sure.  But if you have an mba from a prestigious or well-known school, then your value just went up in the eyes of your future employers.

If you want your investment to really pay off, then you should consider shelling out for a well-known school.  Chances are high that you’ll find a job quicker, and earn more, if you do.

Are we discounting mba degrees from smaller schools?  Absolutely not.   Small schools can offer you a great education.  If you’re looking to fast-track your career and you’re willing to pay for it, however, then a bigger school is going to be your best bet.

Is Getting An MBA Worth It?

Well, most experts wholeheartedly agree “yes”.  Tuition can be expensive, but what you can earn once you’ve gotten your mba usually makes up for the investment.

If you want to find the answer to that question yourself, Forbes Magazine has a handy MBA calculator.

All you do is simply put in your mba school, your pretax salary before your mba, and how much you expect to earn once you’re done.  The calculator then figures up if it will take you more or less than five years to pay back your school loan.
