Hospitality Management

If you like the idea of working in the tourism industry (which can occasionally could lead to some really great business travel opportunities), then you might want to consider getting your mba in hospitality management.

Why Get A Hospitality Management MBA?

Three words: living in Paradise.

Yep, with a hospitality management mba you could work in a posh resort in Tahiti, manage a casino in Vegas, or if skiing is your thing you could run a lodge deep in the Rocky Mountains and ski during your time off.  Bliss, right?

The great thing about a hotel management mba is that it allows you to work in some really interesting places.  Plus, it’s a career that isn’t going away anytime soon.  In this article published by the Washington Post, the American Hotel and Lodging Association says they estimate that the hotel/resort industry is going to generate over 300,000 new jobs by 2014.

Now, if you’re currently working in the hospitality industry then you already know what the downsides are.  If you’ve never worked in this industry, here’s what you need to know:

  • This is a 24/7, 365 days a year gig.  You’ll have to work nights, weekends, and holidays as a hotel manager.
  • It’s hectic; if you’re not good at multi-tasking and staying calm while under pressure, you’re going to sink.
  • You must be able to keep your temper with angry guests.  If you panic during confrontations, or blow your top, you’re not going to work well as a hotel manager.

Really, however, those are the only downsides.  Getting your mba in hospitality management is going to put you into an industry that’s fast-paced and never boring.  If you like the idea of being a mover and a shaker, you’re going to love this industry.

Hotel Management MBA Programs: What You’ll Learn

Hotel management mba programs are going to give you a solid base of business skills, including finance/accounting, management, and leadership.  But your mba program is also going to educate you on the finer points of hotel/hospitality management.

You’ll learn about the specific challenges that hotels, resorts, and casinos face on a daily basis.  You’ll learn about how to market these industries, how to hire good employees, and how to manage a variety of departments like a restaurant, cleaning crew, laundry, and guest relations, all under one roof.

You’ll also learn how to host conferences and events within the hospitality industry, which is its own little world.  Many hotels and resorts employ managers with entire teams whose only job is to manage events going on within the hotel.

Although the classes you’ll take for a hotel management mba will be different with each school, you can expect to see some of the following:

  • Food and Beverage Cost Control
  • Sanitation and Safety
  • Resort Development
  • Housekeeping Management
  • Front Office Operations
  • Business Communication
  • Purchasing and Inventory Control

Careers With An MBA In Hotel Management

So, here’s where it gets good: your mba in hotel management will allow you to work pretty much anywhere in the world, especially if you can speak a foreign language.

Think about it: every resort and hotel needs effective managers.  This means you can market yourself globally with this mba and work anywhere you want.  This is definitely one of the biggest perks to getting a hospitality mba.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that hotel management positions will increase by 12% through 2014.  But, that’s only here in the United States.  Worldwide, the numbers might be much higher than this.

When it comes to how much you can earn with an mba in hotel management, the BLS offers a salary range between $35,000 to $75,000 or more.  A lot will depend on the size of the resort you’re managing, where it is, and how nice it is.

Some resorts also offer hefty bonuses, up to 25% of your annual salary, based upon the performance of the hotel during the year.  Do a good job and you could make significantly more than the figures listed above.

It’s also important not to discount the perks that usually come with hotel management.  Things such as laundry services, discounted or free rooms for family members, free meals, and tuition reimbursement are common perks.

So, if you love the idea of working in an exotic locale and you don’t mind the insane hours, getting your mba in hospitality management might be a perfect career path for you.
