What to Expect from an Online MBA Program

While many job postings don’t require an advanced degree, having an MBA can be what sets you apart from the competition. But as an adult who may already have a full-time job or family, how do you find the time and resources to add supplementary education to your profile? What if you don’t live near an institution that offers an MBA program?

One option is enrolling in an accredited online MBA program. In fact, online enrollment has been up over traditional enrollment in recent years. In order to get the most from your educational experience, it’s best to know what you might expect of the experience going in.

Cost is always dependent on the university. Some feel that there is a convenience being offered for being able to earn a degree online and so their tuition is higher than the traditional MBA. Other universities offer lower tuition rates because there is no room and board or other additional expenses tacked onto the tuition expense. But when it comes to education, it’s not about getting a bargain – it’s about finding the school that works for all of your needs including financial, educational, technological, and professional.

Most courses are taught through a mix of online components and communication tools. There is always email, which is often just the university email that the school assigns to the student. There is also a software platform hosted by the university that students and teachers both have individual login access to. This is where syllabus and assignments are posted and turned in, additional reading materials uploaded and organized, and any class announcements made. There are also forums available for each class where students can go to participate in group discussions assigned by the professor. This is also usually how the professor makes him or herself available; sometimes they put up lecture notes in a specific place, host a live lecture through video chat, or host “office hours” through instant messaging chat. Grades are typically displayed or available through this platform as well.

Like in any graduate school setting, you’ll be expected to come ready to work. Even though you won’t have face-to-face encounters, you’ll be asked to do a lot of research, meet deadlines, work with other people enrolled in the program, and carry the same workload as someone in a traditional MBA. While allowing for flexibility of location and lectures, the online MBA Is still meant to be rigorous and prepare students for real-life business and management situations.

An MBA is a significant investment of time and money, so doing research on the right program for you is important. Knowing how you’ll spend your time now will have a substantial effect on your future.
